Breeding Forward  - Essays on Stewardship and Breeding

The Breeding Forward is a series of essays from Silver Maple Dexters examining the principles, responsibilities, and applied strategies of breed stewardship in Dexter cattle. These essays challenge assumptions, clarify purpose, and propose frameworks for breeders committed to measurable improvement across generations.

Grounded in over 25 years of Dexter breeding and a longer heritage in livestock, the series draws from lived experience, structured study, and breed-specific application. Each piece stands on its own, but together they form an integrated call to action: to preserve what defines the Dexter and to improve what carries it forward.
